Conflict Resolution Strategies for Building Community NE Assembly (14)
This session will provide participants an opportunity to become aware of the principals of Conflict Resolution. Strategies to utilize with diverse student populations will be presented. In addition, the presentation will include discussions and small group work. Other areas to be addressed will encompass gang awareness and precipitators of violence. Presented by Barbara Rivas, Violence Prevention/Intervention Coordinator and Anthony Ceja, Program Specialist from the Safe Schools Unit at the San Diego County Office of Education. Teacher at Sea Office/Lounge (3)
This session will present Dana Tomlinsons experience as one of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Associations (NOAA) Teachers at Sea. For 23 days Ms. Tomlinson sailed on the research vessel Kaimimoana. During this time, Ms. Tomlinson presented seven live interactive web based instructional sessions with students throughout the United States. Learn about the potential for long distance environmental education through technology and how to involve yourself and your students in future projects. Presented by Dana Tomlinson, Teacher at Sea. Enhancing Environmental Education Through Outreach Programs Dining Hall (5)
Participants will learn about the Outreach Programs provided by the San Diego County Office of Education. The Splash Science Mobile Lab and the Green Machine will be emphasized as two programs that bring environmental education directly to the classroom. Doug Connor and Janice Duvall, Outdoor Education Outreach Program Specialists, San Diego County Office of Education will present this program. (Saturday 2:00-3:30)
High School Counselors: Best Practices (Open Forum) SW Assembly (7)
This session will be an open discussion about the challenges and benefits of working with high school counselors in outdoor education settings. Participants will be asked to share experiences, best practices, etc. Notes will be taken at this meeting and electronically distributed to all ROEE participants. (Saturday 2:00-3:30)

Earth Matters: Hands-on Population and Environmental Activities SW Assembly (7)
Learn and participate in hands-on activities that teach about the Earths growing population and its impact on the environment. The curriculum was developed by Population Connection and is used in classrooms, environmental education programs, and anywhere else people want to learn about the Earths resources. Participants will receive a packet of activities. Presented by Helen de la Maza from Orange County Department of Educations Inside the Out of Doors program, Chairperson for Southern California section of the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. Designing Structured EE Lesson Plans Using Music Office/Lounge (3)
Rich and Tonya Mandl, the musical teacher duo Rhymin' Reason, show you how to turn your environmental knowledge into a structured, successful lesson using music. Presented by Rhymin Reason (Sunday 8:45- 10:15)
Fire Making Amphitheater (17)
Learn survival fire making methods utilizing materials such as flint and steel and batteries and steel wool. Participants will come to understand methods to stay alive in survival situations. Presented by Steven Schmich, Tom OBrien, and Mike Moran from the Parkway School District in St. Louis, Missouri. (Sunday 8:45-10:15)
Beneficial Critters Dining Hall (5)
Utilizing a bee hive and live soil samples, complete with earthworms, participants will experience a truly hands-on experience that will explore teaching and learning opportunities in a garden setting. Opening the Door to Natures Classroom: making outdoor education available to every child
Over the past three years, The Sierra Clubs Youth in Wilderness Project has provided nearly $7 million in grants to connect more than 86,000 low-income youth in four states with high quality experiences in nature. What have we learned in the process and where do we go now in a gloomy economic climate? Join us for an overview of our funded programs and the youth served in these grants. We will set aside time for a discussion of how to keep the momentum going despite the economic downturn. Presented by Jackie McCourt of the Sierra Clubs Youth in Wilderness Project. Music and Environmental Education SW Assembly (7)
In this session, participants will learn ways to incorporate music into every aspect of their Environmental Education Program. Songs will be shared that teach lessons and help students to learn and have fun. Presented by Bill Oliver, Mr. Habitat, singer and eco-songwriter. (Sunday 10:30-Noon)
Cuyamaca Outdoor School Curriculum Amphitheater (17)
Review the curriculum of San Diego County Office of Educations Outdoor Education Program. Participants will learn how the curriculum was developed and how it meets California State Science Content Standards. Presented by Greg Schuett, Principal, Cuyamaca Outdoor School. (Sunday 10:30-Noon)
Brain Based Learning NE Assembly (14)
Learn about the biology of learning, including aspects such as attention, comprehension, and memory. Learn brain compatible teaching strategies you can implement immediately. Storytelling through the Art of Pantomime Dining Hall (5)
Participants will learn the vocabulary of the universal language of mime and apply it to a beginning, middle and end. Presented by Abel Silvas. (Sunday 3:00-4:30)
Role Based Discipline Model Office/Lounge (3)
This is a discipline model to utilize with high school cabin leaders to give them tools to more effectively handle their students. It was developed by a Jefferson County (Colorado) social worker and has been expanded and modified to fit residential outdoor education. Presented by Kristy Sjogren, Rich Goben and Sandy Stevens of the Jefferson County Outdoor Environmental Learning Center. (Sunday 3:00-4:30)
Outdoor Education Program Evaluation NE Assembly (14)
Participants will explore the academic evaluation tool developed by Cuyamaca Outdoor School. How this tool is utilized to improve instruction and to provide feedback to staff and program administrators will be discussed. Moving Forward in Difficult Financial Times (Open Forum) SW Assembly (7)
This session will be an open discussion among participants regarding the challenges we are all faced with in these times of shrinking education budgets. Participants will discuss the nature of these problems and brainstorm ideas and solutions. This session provides an opportunity to share ideas from many different regions and perspectives. San Diego County Plant Atlas Office/Lounge (3)
The San Diego Natural History Museum is in the process of developing a Plant Atlas for San Diego County. This undertaking will result in a comprehensive mapping of plant species from throughout San Diego County. Workshop participants will be given an in-depth look at the botanical diversity of one of the most diverse regions in the world. Presented by Jon Redman of the San Diego Natural History Museum. Canyoneers Walk Dining Hall (5)
The San Diego Natural History Museum sponsors the Canyoneers program. This program provides a naturalist led walk in all regions of San Diego County. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about this unique program and to experience the ecology of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park through the eyes of a naturalist. Skulls NE Assembly (14)
How can you make good use of your skull collection? Come learn a very popular, indoor, hands-on skull lesson that teaches students about animal adaptations while helping them improve observation and data gathering skills.
